The Lore of Whiskey Barrel Meats

About Whiskey Barrel Meats

THE LORE OF WHISKEY BARREL MEATS As documented by Mr. Foxworth, Esq. — Editor-in-Chief, The Rare Edition

Every establishment worth its salt has an origin story. Ours involves a whiskey barrel, a typewriter, and a considerable amount of ambition.

Whiskey Barrel Meats was born in Mapleton, North Dakota,  a small town just off I-94, approximately ten minutes west of Fargo  and inside a building that was built to recall time decades ago. During its restoration, tucked deep inside an old whiskey barrel, workers discovered a Corona typewriter. Its keys were still faintly stained with tobacco, ink, and the residue of stories never finished.

I, Mr. Foxworth, considered this a sign. The typewriter now sits atop that very barrel in our vestibule, where it belongs. The Rare Edition; Mapleton's most distinguished publication, and arguably the only one - resumed printing shortly thereafter.

But the typewriter is merely where the story begins.

What the team at Whiskey Barrel Meats set out to build here was never simply a butcher shop. Mapleton, and the broader Fargo region of North Dakota, deserved something it had never had: a boutique butcher experience rooted in craft, community, and an unapologetic sense of occasion.

The result is Whiskey Barrel Meats - a full-service boutique butcher shop where every cut is made by hand, every product is selected with intention, and the air genuinely smells of rosemary the moment you walk through the door. Our Head butcher oversees every cut from the production room, sourcing premium beef, pork, chicken, and house-made sausage for a clientele that has come to expect nothing less.

Inside, the 1920s aesthetic is not decoration. It is philosophy. Wooden floors. Warm light. Music from another era playing softly in the background. And beyond the black curtain - the Smokehouse Lounge, where Buffalo Trace flows from the tap, Old Fashioneds are poured cold, and leather chairs have no intention of releasing you.

This is not the butcher shop you remember. It is the one you have been waiting for.

The Rare Edition exists to document it all - the cuts, the characters, the community, and the occasional editorial from yours truly. Published and available in-store and online, each edition is written on that same Corona typewriter, by the same ink-stained hands, in the same spirit of craftsmanship that defines everything produced inside this building.

We are located at 624 6th Ave SW, Mapleton, ND — one block off the I-94 Mapleton ND exit. We are open seven days a week. We are, in the considered opinion of this Editor-in-Chief, worth the detour.

The next edition is already in progress.

Yours in Smoke & Style,

 Mr. Foxworth, Esq. Editor-in-Chief
